EDUCATION ON SEXUAL AND GENDER DIVERSITY: PENDING SUBJECT

EDUCATION ON SEXUAL AND GENDER DIVERSITY:

PENDING SUBJECT

Historically, the fight of LGBTIQ+ people for decades has been marked by the desire to have the freedom to be who we are, to love who we want and to enjoy the same rights and freedoms that normative citizens have. Along the way, we have encountered numerous obstacles, which we have been facing with the resilience that characterizes our group.

Now it’s time to get to the root of the problem. It is a cultural root deeply engraved in our society that becomes a focus of inequalities, but also of hatred and rejection, central to the ideals of the ultra-right and ultra-catholic forces.

Our existence is still uncomfortable for them and education is the fundamental pillar from which we can fight violence, misunderstanding and the enormous misinformation that exists about dissident existences.

The fight of the last decades has meant that today we can enjoy legislation that increasingly and better protects our civil and human rights. The evidence that our existence is part of human nature from different fields of science, history, art and philosophy, makes clear the need to incorporate the LGTBIQ+ perspective into school as an essential tool to achieve equal treatment and non-discrimination at all stages of life. As a society, we must understand that we must say “enough” to the violence suffered by LGTBIQ+ people just because they exist, that it is something that a democratic society cannot consent to.

DEMANDS

That is why we demand compliance and the integral development of the laws and regulations that affect the schools of our country. This requires more political action that don’t leave these laws on the paper.

WE DEMAND::

  1. The incorporation of the gender and affective-sexual diversity perspective into the Catalan curriculum (Decree 175/2022 that deploys the new LOMLOE education law of 2020).
    1. Extensive training for teachers, management teams and educational inspectors in this subject and its relationship with this knowledge and with the different areas of the curriculum.
    2. That help be provided in the activation of the different protocols of assistance and accompaniment to LGTBIQ+ students and teachers in the face of LGTBQ-phobic aggressions.
    3. That the creation of educational materials for the sharing and learning of the gender perspective and sex-affective diversity that serve as positive models for all students in Catalonia be promoted.
    4. That schools be helped to become safer spaces where both students and LGTBIQ+ teachers are not afraid to make themselves visible and can express themselves freely and with dignity and become positive role models for the rest of the students.
    5. That Catalan schools are spaces where transgender students can see how their gender identity is recognized, regardless of the moment of administrative transition in which they find themselves.

And we address ourselves directly to the Catalan government, who has a responsibility with the correct implementation of these regulations and with the implementation of the necessary measures for the correct incorporation of this perspective into education in Catalonia.

Breaking stereotypes, destigmatising our existence, making our reality visible, ending LGTBI-phobia, showing positive models and paving the way for future generations are some of the real objectives for which LGTBIQ+ activism works in Catalonia.

We are convinced that the new generations, educated in affective-sexual and gender diversity, will create a fairer, more egalitarian and freer society for all, where the rights of LGBTIQ+ people will not be questioned and will not only be defended by our collective, but by society as a whole. This is our dream, our desire, and we will work hard to achieve it, because it is about social justice, about Human Rights.
